Painted this scene from my photos of Sarasota Marina area. I recently took a workshop by artist Katie Dobson Cundiff.  She talked about achieving tones and shades while matching the value study we did prior to doing the color painting.  She works with a limited palette and mixes a pile of gray with black, white and a little burnt sienna to warm it up a bit.  By adding the gray that was the same value as the color I wanted to paint the mass, I was able to desaturize the color and this created harmony.  I have since made different value piles of grays. Some are blue grays, green grays, khaki grays- whatever matches the subject I am working on.
