I painted this pear in Katie Cundiff's workshop.  We did a value study first.

Three Ladies 2

8x8 inch oil on canvas panel

These ladies were enjoying their conversation and so gracious for letting me take their picture.  This was at the Sarasota Marina city park.

Three Ladies 1

8x10 inch oil on canvas panel
Painted this scene from my photos of Sarasota Marina area. I recently took a workshop by artist Katie Dobson Cundiff.  She talked about achieving tones and shades while matching the value study we did prior to doing the color painting.  She works with a limited palette and mixes a pile of gray with black, white and a little burnt sienna to warm it up a bit.  By adding the gray that was the same value as the color I wanted to paint the mass, I was able to desaturize the color and this created harmony.  I have since made different value piles of grays. Some are blue grays, green grays, khaki grays- whatever matches the subject I am working on.

Boothbay 1

12x16 inch oil on cradled gessobord, ready to hang

I took this photo while touring the islands off the coast. There are over 5000 islands off the coast of Maine. Many have summer homes on these islands and can only access them by boat.

11x14 oil on canvas board
I enjoyed doing this one. Approached it like an abstract while trying to keep the whole scene in my mind's eye.

My Arts Castle students

Today was our last day of class. It was a success and sorry to see it end. I am so impressed with their talent.  They worked hard on "limited strokes" exercise.  Look at that awesome bird and gorgeous rose!

Senior beach walker -gouache

I had a hard time getting the flesh colors today.  There were so many subtle changes and when I mixed the colors differently, they just didn't read correctly. Too blah... I made the background more saturated in color but it didn't help much. I'll keep on. Only the fourth day with this new medium.

New medium for me - gouache

This is a new medium for me. I feel like a total beginner.  I started out with a mixed media sketch tablet and was not happy with the results.  I moved to a toned sketch book and liked how the colors really popped. I'll stick with that one for a while.  I also tried painting on my marker paper and liked it but the paper is so thin. I am dating my sketches and hoping for some quick improvement. 😊
